Alabama Treasurer 2019-2021
John McMillan now serves as the Executive Director of the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission.
He grew up in the rural community of Stockton, Alabama in Baldwin County. After graduating from Baldwin County High School, McMillan attended Rhodes College where he earned a BA in economics and returned to work at the family sawmill.
His interest in public service grew out of his appointment by Governor Albert Brewer to the Baldwin County Commission.
McMillan served on the Baldwin County Commission, was twice elected as a State Representative, served as Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, was Executive Vice President of the Alabama Forestry Association for over 20 years, and served 14 years on the State Personnel Board.
During his time as the Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, McMillan was instrumental in the creation of the Alabama Trust Fund, a state trust to preserve the revenue from offshore oil and gas leases.
McMillan was elected as Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.
During his first term as Commissioner, McMillan was appointed by Governor Robert Bentley to serve as a member of the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP) and as Chairman of the Alabama Drone Task Force.
McMillan has served as President of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture (SASDA), the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA), on the Board of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA),and continues to serve on the Board of the University of South Alabama Foundation.
Besides an enthusiasm for community and public service, McMillan loves hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities.
He and his wife, Kathryn, have two sons William and Murphy. Murphy and his wife Beth have two children, daughter El and son John.
